The Wikimedia Foundation is looking for a Lead UX Researcher to lead strategic research that informs the future of Wikipedia and the broader Wikimedia ecosystem.
In this role, you'll work on questions that affect millions of people worldwide—from understanding how users discover Wikipedia through search engines and AI assistants to exploring how new audiences interact with free knowledge across emerging platforms.

What you'll do
You'll lead research initiatives that help product teams make informed, user-centered decisions.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Planning and conducting qualitative and quantitative UX research.
- Leading strategic research projects from discovery through delivery.
- Identifying user needs, behaviors, and opportunities across diverse audiences.
- Partnering with Product Managers, Designers, Engineers, and Data Scientists.
- Translating research findings into clear, actionable recommendations.
- Supporting product strategy with evidence-based insights.
- Helping improve UX research practices across the organization.
- Mentoring researchers and guiding external research partners.
- Sharing research findings openly with the Wikimedia community.
What they're looking for
The ideal candidate will have:
- 6+ years of UX Research experience within product organizations.
- Strong expertise in both qualitative and quantitative research methods.
- Experience conducting interviews, usability studies, surveys, diary studies, and large-scale research.
- Confidence analyzing research data and communicating insights to cross-functional teams.
- A Master's or PhD in HCI, Psychology, Cognitive Science, Anthropology, Statistics, or a related field.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- A passion for human-centered design and mission-driven products.
Experience working with global products, multilingual audiences, or open-source communities is a plus.
