Helpware is hiring a Product Designer to work on an early-stage AI platform being developed for the legal industry.
This is a hands-on role with significant product ownership. You'll work directly with the founders and engineering team to transform complex legal workflows into interfaces that feel clear, efficient and trustworthy, taking projects from initial research and problem definition through to polished production UI.
Because the product and team are still at an early stage, the design decisions you make now will help establish the foundations for how the platform evolves.
About the product
The project is building an AI-powered platform for legal professionals, combining advanced AI reasoning with infrastructure designed around security and privacy.
That creates an interesting Product Design challenge.
Legal professionals routinely work with complex documents, detailed analysis and highly sensitive information. The interface therefore needs to make sophisticated AI functionality accessible without sacrificing clarity, control or trust.
You'll help determine what that experience looks like.
What you'll be designing
You'll own the complete design process rather than focusing exclusively on UI or receiving predefined requirements.
Your work will span:
- Product discovery and problem framing.
- User research.
- User flows.
- Information architecture.
- Wireframes.
- Interactive prototypes.
- High-fidelity UI.
- Usability validation.
- Design systems.
- Production implementation.
A significant part of the challenge will involve designing information-dense professional workflows, particularly around documents, review and analysis.
The objective is to make complicated tools feel calm and understandable without removing the functionality expert users need.
Working directly with users
You'll speak with users to understand how they currently perform their work, where friction exists and how the product could improve those workflows.
Rather than relying entirely on assumptions, you'll use those conversations to validate design decisions and refine solutions.
This makes the position particularly suitable for a designer comfortable moving between research, product thinking and visual execution.
Working with engineering
You'll collaborate closely with frontend engineers throughout implementation.
That includes helping ensure interfaces are:
- Responsive.
- Accessible.
- Visually consistent.
- Technically realistic.
- Accurately implemented.
Experience with HTML and CSS isn't required, but technical familiarity or experience working closely with engineers can be an advantage.
Building the design system
As the product grows, you'll also create and maintain its design system and component library.
Because this is an early-stage environment, you'll have an opportunity to establish many of the patterns that future product experiences will use.
That can include:
- Components.
- Interaction patterns.
- Typography.
- Spacing and layout.
- Visual hierarchy.
- Reusable interface conventions.
- Accessibility considerations.
You may also contribute to the broader brand and visual identity when needed.
What they're looking for
Helpware is looking for someone with approximately 3–5 years of Product Design experience building and shipping real software products, ideally web applications.
Your portfolio should demonstrate strong end-to-end work, including:
- User flows.
- Interaction design.
- Product thinking.
- Prototyping.
- High-quality UI.
- Shipped digital products.
Strong Figma skills are expected, including the ability to prototype and work effectively with design systems.
Designing for complexity
A particularly important skill for this position is the ability to simplify complex professional workflows.
Helpware wants someone who can take products containing large amounts of information and functionality and turn them into experiences that remain structured, understandable and visually calm.
Previous experience designing tools for expert users could therefore be particularly valuable.
Relevant industries might include:
- Legal technology.
- Financial products.
- Healthcare.
- Enterprise software.
- Other complex B2B applications.
AI fluency
AI isn't simply the industry in which this product operates. Helpware also expects the designer to be comfortable using AI tools as part of their own workflow.
They're looking for someone who actively experiments with AI to work more effectively and move faster.
An interest in LLM products and designing trustworthy AI experiences is also considered valuable.
For a legal product, this becomes particularly important: users need to understand and trust AI-assisted outcomes when working with potentially sensitive professional information.
Strengthen your AI product design skills
This role combines two increasingly important Product Design challenges: designing AI-powered experiences and building trust around how those systems behave.
If AI product design is still a gap in your skill set, Designlab's AI Product Design Certification offers hands-on training for experienced designers covering AI-powered product experiences, AI workflows and rapid prototyping, with a final portfolio-ready project.

Experience that could give you an advantage
Helpware highlights several additional areas that could strengthen your application:
- Designing software for expert or professional users.
- Legal tech experience.
- Healthcare or medical products.
- Financial or enterprise software.
- HTML and CSS familiarity.
- Close collaboration with engineers.
- Brand and visual identity work.
- Experience with AI or LLM products.
- Designing interfaces where user trust is particularly important.
Working environment
This is a small, distributed team, so you'll need to be comfortable working independently and communicating decisions clearly.
You'll collaborate directly with founders and engineers rather than operating inside a large design organization.
That also means your work will have considerable visibility and influence from the beginning.
Why this role stands out
This is an interesting opportunity for a mid-level Product Designer who wants more ownership than they might receive inside a larger organization.
You'll be helping establish an early product's UX, UI, design system and visual language, while solving complex workflows for professional users and exploring how AI should operate inside a high-trust environment.
The combination of AI + legal technology + end-to-end ownership + direct founder collaboration makes it especially relevant for designers looking to develop experience designing the next generation of AI-powered professional software.
