GitBook is a modern documentation platform helping teams deliver excellent product experiences through well-crafted content. The company operates fully remotely, with a distributed team across several continents. They’re a small, collaborative team of generalists who enjoy solving complex problems and working across disciplines.

About the Role
GitBook is hiring a Product Designer who combines strong visual design skills with a strategic, systems-thinking mindset. This role involves contributing to every stage of the design process—from shaping early ideas to crafting polished user interfaces and refining the design system.

If you enjoy working across UX, UI, and code—and care deeply about quality and usability—this could be a great fit.

Responsibilities

  • Lead visual and interaction design across the GitBook product
  • Collaborate with engineering, product, and marketing teams throughout the design and development cycle
  • Contribute to front-end development (React, TypeScript, and CSS) to help implement your designs
  • Maintain and improve the existing design system to ensure consistency and usability
  • Turn insights and feedback into thoughtful, user-centered solutions
  • Create interactive prototypes to test and validate concepts
  • Partner closely with engineers to ensure high-quality execution of design work

What They’re Looking For

  • A strong sense of visual design, with attention to detail across typography, layout, and motion
  • The ability to move between UX flows, UI components, and front-end code
  • A collaborative mindset—comfortable giving and receiving feedback, sharing work early, and supporting the team
  • Hands-on coding skills: HTML, CSS, and JavaScript (experience with React is a plus)
  • A proactive, self-directed approach, with a focus on outcomes over deliverables

Qualifications

  • At least 3 years of experience in product or UX/UI design
  • A portfolio showcasing thoughtful design work and polished visual execution
  • Experience working with or maintaining a design system
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to explain design choices to cross-functional teams
  • Comfort working in a technical environment and collaborating closely with developers

Hiring Process
GitBook aims to keep the process straightforward and respectful of your time. Here's the typical flow:

  1. Introductory call with the People Team
  2. Interview with the Co-founder and CTO
  3. Portfolio review or case study session with team members
  4. Final conversation with the CEO

Additional steps, such as a design task or work sample, may be added if needed. You'll be kept informed throughout the process.

Why Join GitBook
You’ll be joining the team at a high-impact moment, as GitBook focuses on its next stage of growth. The team is small, the challenges are meaningful, and your work will shape the product's future. GitBook values simplicity, transparency, care, and a bias toward meaningful action.
