How do you design an AI system that users know when not to trust?

That's one of the central challenges behind this Senior Product Designer role at Red Cell Partners, working with DEFCON AI.

DEFCON AI applies artificial intelligence, mathematical optimization, data analytics and software engineering to complex decision-support problems. For this project, the company is replacing several disconnected legacy tools with a unified workspace where users can prioritize work, bring scattered information together, examine supporting evidence and make consequential decisions.

The difficult part isn't simply organizing all that information into a cleaner interface.

The system itself will make recommendations.

Your job is to make those recommendations understandable enough that an expert can decide whether to trust the model, question it or override it.

The design problem starts with trust

AI output won't be presented as an unquestionable answer.

You'll design ways to expose the evidence behind recommendations, communicate confidence and uncertainty, highlight situations where evidence is insufficient, and give users an obvious path for disagreeing with the system.

Those decisions also need to remain traceable, so conclusions can be connected back to their original records.

That makes this a particularly interesting opportunity for a designer interested in the emerging interaction patterns around human-AI decision making, explainability and oversight.

Develop the AI Product Design skills behind roles like this

This role illustrates how AI is changing Product Design beyond simply adding AI tools to a designer's workflow. DEFCON AI needs someone who can design confidence, explainability, human review, overrides and trust into an AI-enabled product.

Designlab's AI Product Design Certification is built for working UX and Product Designers who want practical experience designing AI-powered products and integrating AI into the product design process.

You'll start with the people doing the work

This is a discovery-heavy position.

Before designing the future workflow, you'll interview and observe users doing their jobs today. You'll map the existing process, identify which constraints genuinely matter and use those findings to define a new experience.

An interactive prototype is expected early in the program and will be reviewed by the customer before production development begins. This isn't exploratory work that disappears into a presentation: design deliverables are formally evaluated against defined criteria.

From there, you'll design a workspace that can include:

  • Prioritized work queues and decision flows.
  • Unified record and case views.
  • Evidence and enrichment panels.
  • Record histories and traceability.
  • Trend and data-visualization experiences.
  • Operational dashboards.
  • AI recommendations and confidence indicators.
  • Review and override interactions.

These interfaces need to work for expert users dealing with high volumes of information, so scannability, keyboard efficiency, low context switching and reducing errors under pressure all matter. Accessibility must also meet Section 508 and WCAG requirements.

This is ownership, not handoff

You'll work alongside another designer, but this is a highly senior individual-contributor position.

Design sits within the product organization, and you'll partner closely with product, engineering and data throughout the lifecycle rather than delivering finished Figma files and moving on.

That includes reviewing implementations, maintaining quality as features ship, learning from analytics and real-world feedback, and helping establish stronger research, design-system and engineering-handoff practices as the design function develops.

There's significant influence attached to the position: Red Cell is looking for someone comfortable setting design direction without relying on another layer of design leadership to make the difficult calls.

What they're looking for

You'll need 8+ years of Product or UX Design experience and a portfolio demonstrating complex applications you've helped take from discovery through launch and adoption.

This isn't primarily a consumer-app or marketing-site portfolio role. Particularly relevant experience includes:

  • Data-dense enterprise applications.
  • Dashboards and data visualization.
  • Role-based experiences and layered permissions.
  • Queues, cases and record-management workflows.
  • Information architecture for complex systems.
  • Design systems and reusable components.
  • Direct user interviews and observational research.
  • High-fidelity prototyping in Figma or equivalent.
  • Designing for expert users in unfamiliar domains.
  • Working directly with front-end engineering.
  • Accessibility as part of normal product practice.

Experience with government products, controlled environments, AI/model outputs, high-volume triage workflows, React/HTML/CSS or regulated enterprise products would strengthen an application further.

Important clearance requirements

This position has unusually specific eligibility requirements that candidates should check before applying.

You must be a US citizen and already hold an active US Top Secret security clearance. This is a current-clearance requirement rather than an opportunity for the employer to sponsor someone for clearance.

The position is fully remote but requires willingness to travel up to 25% to customer locations, DEFCON AI headquarters and vendor facilities when needed.

Compensation and benefits

The salary range is $180,000–$215,000, depending on experience and other relevant factors, with bonus and equity also available.

Full-time benefits include employer-paid medical, dental and vision coverage for employees and their families, unlimited PTO with management approval, 14 weeks of paid parental leave, professional-development opportunities and optional 401(k), FSA and equity incentives.
