Gearbox Entertainment is looking for a Senior UX Designer to shape how players understand, navigate and interact with the UI systems inside its games.
This is a specialized Game UX position for someone with extensive experience designing and shipping video games. You'll work across menus, HUDs, controls, player feedback, accessibility and in-engine UI, collaborating with game designers, UI artists, developers and UX leadership.
Candidates should have at least 7 years of professional Game UI/UX experience and have contributed to a shipped AAA title.
Design UX around the player
Your primary challenge will be making complex game systems understandable without disrupting the core gameplay experience.
You'll examine new features and determine whether players receive the right information and feedback at the right moment.
Your work will touch areas such as:
- Menu navigation
- HUD experiences
- Player feedback
- Control schemes
- Tutorials
- Typography
- UI layouts
- Accessibility
- Gamepad interactions
- Keyboard and mouse interactions
You'll also identify areas where players could become confused and work with Systems, Content and UI teams to improve those experiences.
Establish consistent Game UX patterns
You'll help maintain UX standards across menus and other interface elements.
That includes contributing guidance around:
- Layout
- Typography
- Interaction patterns
- Universal controls
- Accessibility
- Player feedback
Rather than designing isolated screens, you'll need to think about how individual UI systems connect to the game's wider experience.
You'll work closely with both UI Art and UI Engineering to make sure the final implementation preserves the intended experience.
Take designs into the game
This isn't exclusively a wireframing or documentation role.
Gearbox wants a designer capable of participating in implementation and rapidly testing ideas within the game engine.
You may work on:
- Quick in-engine UI prototypes
- UI behavior
- Tutorials
- Text and content
- Controls
- Interaction feedback
You'll collaborate with the development team throughout implementation and refine experiences as they become playable.
Experience with Unreal Engine and UMG is particularly valuable.
Use playtesting to improve the experience
You'll also contribute to UI playtesting.
That means helping determine what should be tested, observing where players encounter problems and turning feedback into actionable design improvements.
You'll need to distinguish between isolated player reactions and UX problems that require changes to navigation, feedback or interaction design.
Accessibility should be considered throughout this process rather than treated as a final-stage check.
What Gearbox is looking for
This is a genuinely senior Game UX position.
Candidates should have:
- 7+ years of professional Game UI/UX experience
- Experience shipping a AAA game
- Strong Game UX and UI knowledge
- Experience designing player flows
- HUD design knowledge
- Menu and navigation experience
- Understanding of control mapping
- Experience designing player feedback
- UI implementation experience
- Strong UX documentation skills
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
- Ability to work independently and stay focused on project goals
A portfolio demonstrating shipped game UX work and implementation experience will be particularly important for this level of role.
Experience that could set you apart
Gearbox lists several additional areas that could strengthen your application:
- Unreal Engine
- UMG
- First-person shooters
- Online multiplayer
- Co-op games
- Modern console certification and shipping
- Game accessibility
- Mentoring or leadership
- French fluency
Knowledge of Borderlands mechanics and familiarity with control patterns across gamepad, keyboard and mouse are also advantageous.
