Freebird is looking for a Senior UX/UI Designer with exceptional visual design skills to lead the evolution of its digital interfaces and design system.

This opportunity is ideal for an experienced designer who combines solid UX expertise with an outstanding eye for typography, spacing, colour, layout, and visual consistency. You'll play a central role in establishing the visual standards across Freebird's digital platforms, ensuring every interaction feels polished, intuitive, and aligned with the brand.

Working closely with the Senior Director of Design, product teams, and engineers, you'll translate business objectives and user needs into refined, production-ready digital experiences.

This is a fully remote position requiring meaningful overlap with US working hours.

Key Responsibilities

Elevate the Visual Design Experience

  • Design polished, premium interfaces across Freebird's websites, applications, and digital customer touchpoints.
  • Refine existing experiences through thoughtful typography, colour, spacing, layout, and visual hierarchy.
  • Establish and maintain consistent visual standards across digital products.
  • Apply strong visual judgment to transform functional interfaces into engaging, high-quality experiences.
  • Help define the level of visual craftsmanship expected across the wider design team.

Own and Evolve the Design System

  • Lead the development and ongoing improvement of Freebird's design system in Figma.
  • Manage reusable UI components, design tokens, interaction patterns, and supporting documentation.
  • Establish clear practices for design system governance, version control, and consistency.
  • Review designs to ensure alignment with established visual standards and components.
  • Collaborate with engineers to ensure consistency between Figma designs and production interfaces.
  • Create detailed specifications that support efficient implementation.

Design User-Centred Digital Experiences

  • Create responsive and accessible interfaces across desktop and mobile.
  • Develop user flows, wireframes, interactive prototypes, and high-fidelity UI designs.
  • Apply UX principles and information architecture to simplify complex interactions.
  • Make independent design decisions based on user needs, product objectives, and visual quality.
  • Use customer feedback and product performance data to improve experiences after launch.
  • Incorporate accessibility best practices throughout the design process.

Deliver Production-Ready Designs

  • Translate product requirements and stakeholder briefs into polished designs within agile sprint cycles.
  • Prepare complete developer handoffs, including design specifications, interaction behaviours, and edge cases.
  • Work closely with engineering teams to ensure accurate implementation.
  • Participate in sprint planning, design reviews, and delivery discussions.
  • Identify design and implementation challenges early and communicate solutions proactively.
  • Maintain consistently high design quality while meeting project deadlines.

Support Design Collaboration and Mentorship

  • Contribute thoughtful perspectives during design critiques and product discussions.
  • Help junior designers develop stronger visual design skills and consistent working practices.
  • Communicate design decisions clearly to stakeholders and senior leadership.
  • Respond constructively to feedback while maintaining a strong design perspective.
  • Support a collaborative design culture focused on craftsmanship, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of professional experience in UX/UI Design, Product Design, or a related discipline.
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating exceptional visual design quality across real digital products.
  • Proven experience building, maintaining, or significantly contributing to a production design system.
  • Advanced visual design skills, particularly in typography, colour, layout, hierarchy, and spacing.
  • Strong understanding of UX fundamentals, including user journeys, information architecture, wireframing, and prototyping.
  • Advanced proficiency in Figma, including reusable components and design system workflows.
  • Knowledge of accessible and inclusive design, including familiarity with WCAG guidelines.
  • Experience delivering digital design projects from initial requirements through implementation.
  • Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and communicate effectively in a remote environment.
  • Strong collaboration skills when working with engineers, product teams, and senior stakeholders.

Nice to Have

  • Experience designing DTC ecommerce platforms, subscription services, or consumer-facing digital products.
  • Familiarity with Shopify or headless commerce technologies.
  • Understanding of conversion rate optimisation (CRO) and conversion-focused design.
  • Working knowledge of HTML and CSS and their implications for interface implementation.
  • Previous experience mentoring designers or facilitating design critiques.

What Success Looks Like

During your first 6–12 months, you'll be expected to make a visible impact on Freebird's digital design quality.

Success will include:

  • Delivering a more polished and premium experience across the company's digital products.
  • Establishing a scalable, well-documented design system adopted consistently across teams.
