Blackbird Interactive is an independent game development studio working across established franchises and original titles in multiple genres.

The studio operates with a remote-first model and flexible working arrangements. For this position, however, applicants must live in Canada and be legally authorized to work there.

About the Role

Blackbird Interactive is looking for an experienced Technical UI/UX Designer to help bring an established simulation game to additional platforms.

This is a particularly hands-on UX position. Rather than focusing exclusively on concepts and prototypes, you'll work directly with UI systems to adapt existing interfaces to different platforms, screen resolutions, control methods, and technical requirements.

The goal is to preserve the existing player experience while making the interface feel natural and usable on each new platform.

What You'll Do

  • Adapt existing game interfaces for new platforms and input methods.
  • Create responsive UI layouts for different resolutions, screens, and aspect ratios.
  • Build, modify, debug, and polish interfaces directly within the game's UI toolset.
  • Refine screens, navigation flows, and player interactions.
  • Work with engineering to improve UI responsiveness, stability, and performance.
  • Solve platform-specific UX problems involving controller navigation and focus management.
  • Improve readability, accessibility, and overall player usability.
  • Maintain consistency with the game's established visual language and interaction patterns.
  • Test and iterate on implemented interfaces.
  • Document UI decisions, technical limitations, and implementation guidelines.

What They're Looking For

Candidates should have 3+ years of professional UI/UX experience within game development, particularly in roles involving technical implementation.

You'll also need:

  • Professional experience with Scaleform, including layouts, animation, data binding, and debugging.
  • Experience adapting or porting UI-heavy games between platforms.
  • Strong understanding of controller-first UX.
  • Knowledge of focus management and cross-platform interaction patterns.
  • Experience designing interfaces across multiple resolutions and aspect ratios.
  • Strong technical problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to collaborate with engineers, game designers, artists, production, and QA.
  • Ability to work independently on complex UI implementation challenges.

Nice to Have

Additional relevant experience includes:

  • Refactoring or modernizing legacy game interfaces.
  • UI animation and motion design.
  • Accessibility and usability for games.
  • Player comfort considerations.
  • Designing polished interfaces within significant technical constraints.

Compensation

The listed annual salary range is:

$90,000–$110,000

Location Requirements

This is a remote-first position within Canada.

Applicants must both:

Reside in Canada and be legally eligible to work in Canada.

Candidates based outside Canada are not currently eligible for this position.
