Elastic is the company behind the Elastic Search AI Platform, combining search technology with artificial intelligence to help organizations find and use information across large volumes of structured and unstructured data.
Its technology supports search, security, observability, and AI applications and is used by more than half of the Fortune 500.
About the Role
Elastic is hiring a UX & Front-End Engineer focused on AI to design and build the next generation of internal generative and agentic AI experiences.
This isn't a traditional UX Designer or Front-End Engineer position. It combines both disciplines.
You'll translate sophisticated AI capabilities into intuitive interfaces while working directly with AI backend engineers, Product Managers, UX Designers, and users.
The role goes beyond conventional chatbot interfaces. Elastic is exploring experiences around AI agents, streaming responses, dynamic prompts, agent execution, multimodal interactions, and complex human-AI workflows.
What You'll Do
Design & Build AI Experiences
- Translate generative and agentic AI processes into intuitive product experiences.
- Design and implement interfaces for conversational and agent-based AI.
- Prototype new human-AI interaction patterns.
- Build experiences around dynamic prompt workflows.
- Design ways of communicating agent execution and activity.
- Create rich, dynamic interfaces for AI-generated outputs.
- Turn complex AI reasoning and system behavior into understandable user experiences.
Front-End Engineering
You'll be responsible for both the experience and its technical implementation.
You'll:
- Build high-performance front-end applications.
- Develop reusable UI components for AI interactions.
- Architect scalable component libraries.
- Work extensively with React and TypeScript.
- Manage complex asynchronous application states.
- Implement real-time AI response experiences.
- Work with WebSockets and Server-Sent Events.
- Optimize interfaces for streaming LLM responses.
- Implement optimistic UI patterns.
- Connect front-end experiences with internal APIs and AI services.
Human-AI Interaction
A major part of the role is defining how users interact with increasingly capable AI systems.
You'll explore patterns for:
- Conversational AI
- Generative AI
- AI agents
- Agent execution visibility
- Tool calls
- Dynamic prompting
- Multimodal interactions
- Streaming AI responses
- Complex AI-generated outputs
The goal is to make sophisticated AI behavior understandable and useful rather than simply exposing the underlying technology.
AI, RAG & Agent Integration
You'll connect user-facing experiences with Elastic's AI infrastructure and other AI services.
Relevant technologies and concepts include:
- Generative AI
- Agentic AI
- LLM applications
- Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)
- Elasticsearch Relevance Engine (ESRE)
- Elastic Agent Builder
- AI orchestration APIs
- LangGraph
- REST APIs
- GraphQL
You'll work closely with backend AI engineers to turn these capabilities into usable enterprise experiences.
What They're Looking For
Elastic is looking for someone with a strong combination of front-end engineering and UX/UI expertise, together with recent practical experience building GenAI products.
Key qualifications include:
- Recent experience creating interfaces for Generative AI applications.
- Experience with conversational AI interfaces.
- Experience with dynamic prompt builders.
- Understanding of complex agent workflows.
- Deep TypeScript knowledge.
- Strong JavaScript experience.
- Advanced React skills.
- HTML5 and CSS/Sass.
- Experience building modular front-end architectures.
- Experience managing complex asynchronous UI state.
- WebSockets and Server-Sent Events experience.
- Understanding of streaming LLM interfaces.
- UX/UI Design foundations.
- Wireframing and rapid prototyping experience.
- Experience with Figma or similar design tools.
- Experience integrating AI/LLM backend services.
- Experience working with enterprise design systems.
- Familiarity with Storybook or similar component-documentation tools.
- Strong understanding of web performance and cross-browser compatibility.
Design Systems & Accessibility
You'll build and maintain reusable UI components specifically for AI-powered experiences while contributing to Elastic's broader design ecosystem.
Interfaces must align with Elastic UI (EUI) and follow established accessibility standards.
Relevant experience includes:
- Design Systems
- Component Libraries
- Storybook
- WCAG
- Accessible interface design
- Responsive front-end development
- Component documentation
AI UX Analytics
The role also involves measuring how effectively people interact with AI.
You'll implement front-end analytics to understand areas such as:
- User satisfaction
- Prompt effectiveness
- Interaction latency
- Interface usability
These signals can then be used to refine AI workflows and improve the overall human-AI experience.
Why This Role Stands Out
This position represents an emerging hybrid role: UX Engineer for AI.
Rather than handing designs from UX to engineering, you'll be involved in both defining the interaction and building it.
That makes it particularly relevant for designers and front-end engineers interested in where product development is moving as agentic interfaces and AI-native interaction patterns mature.
